Fun fact, you can do the same trick in Yellow with the Pewter gym trainers 1st Diglet, but you have to let it knock you out after Growing. It gets you a lv 1 Gengar. Also also you can do it more than once with the trainer in Varidian forest.

I loved this series as a kid and it still holds up to this day
